A home network connects two or more computers together using a router, which allows for a shared internet connection, file, and print sharing capabilities.

Netgear Routers:

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password
  3. Open Wireless Settings
  4. Click on Wireless Settings on the left side
  5. Your WEP/WPA key should be located on this page

Ambit Routers:

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password
  3. Click Wireless
  4. Click Security
  5. Your WEP/WPA key should be located on this page

Cisco Routers:

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password
  3. Click Setup
  4. Under Wireless, click on Security
  5. Your WEP/WPA key should be located on this page

Motorola Routers:

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password
  3. Click Wireless on the top menu bar
  4. Click Primary Network in the menu on the left side
  5. Your WEP/WPA key should be located on this page

SMC Routers:

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password
  3. Click Wireless in the menu bar on the left side
  4. Under Wireless, click Encryption
  5. Your WEP/WPA key should be located on this page

Most routers will operate correctly with Charter service on their default settings.

However, if this is not the case for your router, you may want to contact the support options available for your brand of router, and ask them how to configure for dynamic IP addresses, or DHCP.

Click the View button found in the left hand area of the Home Network Install CD's main application window.

Your password is shown alongside the full wireless security settings automatically created and administered by the Home Network Install CD.

  1. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar of an internet browser and press Enter
  2. Log in to your router using username and password

SSID - Name of your wireless network - Change the name from the default

Broadcast SSID - Disable this feature - You will need to know the name to connect any future devices

WEP/WPA Encryption - Enable this feature (WPA provides greater security and is recommended)

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the on/off icon
  3. Available Wi-Fi networks appears under Choose a Network...
  4. Locate and tap the Wi-Fi network you want to join
  5. If your Wi-Fi network requires a password enter it and click Join
  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the on/off icon
  3. Available Wi-Fi networks appears under Choose a Network...
  4. Locate and tap the Wi-Fi network you want to join
  5. If your Wi-Fi network requires a password enter it and click Join
  1. Verify that your computer's wireless switch is ON
  2. If you are using a Motorola Modem/Router verify the Standby light is off
  3. Verify you are within 100ft. of the router
  4. Verify there are no issues with the wireless card in "Device Manager"
  5. If using a USB adapter unplug it and plug it back in
  6. Power cycle the Modem/Router by unplugging it for 15 seconds then plugging it back in
  7. Try re-installing the drivers for the wireless adapter
  8. Run a virus scan

To add other computers to Charter WiFi, run the InstaLAN software from the CD provided at time of install or the file you downloaded

  1. Click Add to connect additional PCs
  2. Select the Wired tab if the computer is connecting to the router with an Ethernet cable
  3. If connecting wirelessly (i.e. Laptop) stay on the Wireless tab
  4. The Next button will highlight once the wireless adapter is recognized. Click Next to continue
  5. Select the name of your wireless home network
  6. Enter the password and click Next

It is recommended that you use at least WPA when securing your wireless network.

Since WEP is relatively easy to crack, this encryption method is no longer recommended for use.

If you are using Charter WiFi the initial set up for wireless networking should be completed by the installing tech.

To add a new computer, insert the InstaLAN disc you were left with into the PC you would like to add to the network. Follow the prompts to connect to PC.

If you are using your own wireless router you will need to call the manufacturer of your wireless equipment for support.

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Connect To
  3. Select your name (SSID)
  4. Click on the Connect button on the bottom of the page
  5. Enter the Security Key and then click Connect

Wired Connection:

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable to the PS3 system
  2. Select Network Settings under Settings in the home menu, and press the X button
  3. Select Internet Connection Settings and press the X button
  4. Select Easy
  5. Select Wired Connection and press the X button
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust the required settings

Wireless Connection:

  1. Select Network Settings under Settings in the home menu, and press the X button
  2. Select Internet Connection Settings and press the X button
  3. A message stating the Internet connection will be terminated will display, select Yes and press the X button
  4. Select Easy
  5. Select Wireless and press the X button
  6. Select Scan
  7. Select the network you wish to join
  8. Select the security settings that you use (None/WEP/WPA)
  9. Enter the encryption key
  10. Save your settings and test your connection

Wired

  1. Plug an ethernet cable to your Xbox 360
  2. Press the Xbox button in the center of your controller
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Select System Settings
  5. Select Network Settings
  6. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so
  7. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

Wireless

  1. Press the Xbox button in the center of your controller
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select System Settings
  4. Select Network Settings
  5. Select the name of your wireless network
  6. Enter your wireless network password

Wired

  1. Use the Wii Remote to select the Wii button
  2. Select Wii Settings
  3. Using the arrow on the right side of the screen, scroll to page 2 and select Internet
  4. Select Connection Settings
  5. Select an empty connection slot. (Ex: Connection 1: None)
  6. Select Wireless Connection
  7. Select Search for an Access Point
  8. Select your wireless network
  9. Type in your security key or password and select OK
  10. Select OK
  11. Select Save Settings
  12. Select Yes. When you see The connection test was successful you are connected

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) keys are:

Security codes used on some WiFi networks

Hexadecimal - Can only be comprised of a combination of letters A-F and numbers 0-9

64-bit WEP keys are 10 characters in length (0-9, A-F)

128-bit WEP keys are 26 characters in length (0-9, A-F)

Relatively easy to crack

Not recommended if you have the option to use WPA

The SSID is the name you give your wireless network so that a computer using a wireless adapter can "see" the network.

Most wireless routers will display a factory default SSID. It is strongly recommended that you change the SSID from the factory default setting.

The SSID can be a maximum length of 32 alphanumeric characters

After you have typed a new SSID, write it down to reference later when connecting a computer using a wireless adapter.

Wired

  1. Click on the AirPort icon in the upper-right corner of your desktop
  2. Click the name of the wireless network you wish to join
  3. If the network is secured, you will be asked you for a network key
  4. Type the network key into the window
  5. Click the OK button when finished to connect
  6. The AirPort icon will turn black, and it will display the signal strength

Charter Cloud Drive is a safe way to store, backup, share and remotely access all your information at any time, from any computer with a broadband connection.

Charter Cloud Drive is available to everyone who subscribes to Charter internet for a low monthly fee.

Charter Cloud Drive includes:

  1. Access via a Web portal: Clouddrive.Charter.net
  2. Backup Manager application: Enables backup of information from your PC or Mac.
  3. Navigator application: Enables access to files directly from a desktop as you would a hard drive

Files stored using one of the applications is accessible from a Web interface.

Charter Cloud Drive is available for $5.00 a month for Internet Express or higher, and $10 a month for Internet Lite customers.

In order to use Charter Cloud Drive, you must first be an active Charter Internet subscriber with a Charter My Account or Charter.net Email account

Before accessing Charter Cloud Drive, you must first register, accept the Terms of Service, and create a profile.

To Register:

  1. Access Charter.net and click on Support
  2. On the My Account and Help page, click on Register under the Charter Cloud Drive section
  3. Log into the registration site using your Charter My Account User Name and Password or with your Charter.net email user name and password

After registration is complete access the Charter Cloud Drive at CloudDrive.Charter.net and sign in with your My Account or Charter.net Email

Verify that you are subscribed to Charter Internet and Charter Cloud Drive

If you have not registered for Charter Cloud Drive got to Charter.net, click on Support then click on "Register" in the Charter Cloud Drive section

Visit Clouddrive.charter.net and try to access your Cloud Drive

Verify you have the latest browser updates and plugins at Charter.net/downloads.php

Verify that your computer meets the minimum requirements for Charter Cloud Drive

The length of time it takes to upload a file can vary depending on:

  1. The speed of your internet connection
    • Lite - Up to 3Mbpsdownload/384kbps upload
    • Express - Up to 15Mbps download/3Mbps upload
    • Plus - Up to 30Mbps download/4Mbps upload
    • Ultra - Up to 100Mbps download/5Mbps upload
  2. The size of the file you are uploading
  3. Amount of customers transferring data in your node/area

Using the Backup Manager application, you can make regular backups of your PC.

Backups can be made automatically in Backup Manager simply by selecting the folders on your hard drive you want to backup and choosing a backup schedule.

As long as your PC is on, backups will occur as specified.

You can connect to Charter Cloud Drive from any PC with Internet access.

The "Navigator" and "Backup" applications are installed on a single PC, but a single account can download the applications to multiple computers.

LightBox is a unique space on Charter Cloud drive designed to provide extra features for media files. From this space, music, picture and video files can be played, organized and shared with your family and friends.

Once files are in the cloud, it will only update them if they have been updated on your computer.

If a file is interrupted during the upload process, (Network failure, Power failure etc...) Charter Cloud Drive will not resume the partial file. The upload will start from the beginning if the file was partially uploaded.

To share files on your Charter Cloud Drive

  1. Go to "File Manager"
  2. Place a checkmark next to the file(s) you want to share
  3. Click the "Share" button
  4. From the "Share Items" window, select who the file is shared with by the address book or Email address

The help menu is content-sensitive, meaning the contents displayed will vary depending on the page you are viewing.

You can use the search tool to quickly locate files on your Charter Cloud Drive:

  1. Type the full or partial name of the file you want to locate
  2. The "File Manager" page will display a list of files that meet your search criteria

  1. Login to your My Account at Charter.com/Account, select the Online Tools tab.
  2. Click on the Charter Security Suite tab
  3. Click the Quick Installation Instruction header then click the "Activate" link
  4. Click the Click Here to Install With Key link
  5. Click the Download for Windows button
  6. Click Run from the File Download box
  7. The File Download box will display the progress of the download
  8. Choose the installation language and click Next
  9. Click Accept for the License Agreement
  10. The software license key should be listed in the Subscription box If not, type it in manually. Click Next
  11. When the installation tasks have completed, click Restart to complete the installation
  12. After the restart, the Charter Security Suite® will validate the subscription and install updates

To activate a new Charter Security Suite (CSS) Security Key:

  1. Login to your My Account
  2. Click "Charter Security Suite" under the "Online Tools" section
  3. Click "Activate" under "Quick installation" instructions to generate a new key

Note: Key will also be Emailed to the contact Email address stored in My Account

To view your current CSS Security Key:

  1. Open CSS
  2. Click on the Settings Option (Blue Wrench/Screwdriver at bottom right)
  3. Click on Other settings
  4. Click on Subscription

Reinstalling the Charter Security Suite follows the same process as a new installation.

  1. Login to your My Account at Charter.com/myaccount, select the "Online Tools" tab
  2. Click on the Charter Security Suite® tab (Click "Learn More" for system requirements)
  3. Click the "Quick Installation Instruction" header then click the "Activate" link
  4. Click the "Click Here to Install With Key" link
  5. Click the "Download for Windows" button
  6. Click "Run" from the "File Download" box
  7. The "File Download" box will display the progress of the download
  8. Choose the installation language and click "Next"
  9. Click "Accept" for the License Agreement
  10. The software license key should be listed in the Subscription box If not, type it in manually, then click Next
  11. When the installation tasks have completed, click "Restart" to complete the installation
  12. After the restart, the Charter Security Suite® will validate the subscription and install updates

To temporarily turn off or unload the Charter Security Suite:

  1. Right mouse click on the Charter Security Suite lock in the system tray (next to the clock)
  2. Hover your mouse over 'Unload'
  3. Click 'Unload and Allow All Network Traffic'
  4. Click 'Unload' on the pop-up warning box

To reactivate or reload the Charter Security Suite:

  1. Right mouse click on the Charter Security Suite lock in the system tray (next to the clock)
  2. Click 'Reload'

Note: Restarting your computer will also reload the Charter Security Suite

  1. Double-click on the Charter Security Suite Icon in the Task Bar. This will launch the application
  2. Click the Settings button
  3. Click the Other settings heading to expand the menu
  4. The Subscription section allows you to view the current subscription key as well as the option of changing it
  1. Double-click on the Charter Security Suite Icon in the Task Bar
  2. Click the Settings button
  3. Click the Network Connections header to expand the menu, then click Firewall

Note: The firewall is turned on by default. It is recommended that you do not turn this feature off.

Windows 7, Vista:

  1. Click Start and 'Control Panel'
  2. Click 'Uninstall a program'
  3. Click on the name and click 'Uninstall/Change'
  4. Ensure 'Remove All' is selected and then click Start
  5. The progress bar will show the time remaining
  6. When the process is complete, click Finish

Windows XP:

  1. Click 'Start', 'Settings' and 'Control Panel'
  2. Click 'Add/Remove Programs'
  3. Click on the name and click 'Change/Remove'
  4. Ensure 'Remove All' is selected and click Start
  5. The progress bar will show the time remaining
  6. When the process is complete, click Finish

The Charter Security Suite (CSS) includes a feature that will uninstall most antivirus products found to conflict during the installation process.

If CSS is unable to remove the conflicting software, you will need to manually remove it through your operating system's control panel.

Failure to remove other antivirus programs may cause installation problems, poor performance and erratic behavior.

To reset your Parent Password:

  1. Open the Charter Security Suite - A dialog box opens asking you to enter the parent password
  2. Click the "Forgot your password?" link
  3. Enter the first four digits of your subscription key and click Next
  4. Enter a new password
  5. Confirm your new password by re-entering it.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter a password hint
  8. Click OK
  9. A message is shown stating that the password has been successfully reset

You do not need to re-register the Charter Security Suite as long as you still have an active subscription key.

Simply download the security suite through your My Account and enter the same active subscription key during the installation process.

  4. Click 'E-mail Filtering'
  5. Adjust you level of filtering
  6. To reset the e-mail filtering option, click the Reset filters link

Note: The aggressive setting may send legitimate e-mails into the junk folder

Below are a few common issues that prevents the installation of the Charter Security Suite (CSS):

  1. Old security software is installed on your computer
    Resolution - Manually remove the software before you can continue with the installation.
  2. Your PC might be infected with a virus
    Resolution - Perform an online virus scan then install CSS
  3. A previous instance of the CSS is corrupted
    Resolution - Uninstall CSS through the control panel and then restart your computer then reinstall CSS. If this does not work
  4. Your operating system is not supported or does not meet the system requirements

To install the Charter Security Suite (CSS) on computers in your home follow the steps below:

  1. Log into your My Account from the computer that will have the CSS key activated
  2. Click the 'Online Tools' tab
  3. Click the 'Charter Security Suite' tab
  4. Expand the 'Quick installation instructions' section
  5. Follow the steps (Activate, Download, Install Package) provided

Note: To install CSS on another computer, follow the steps above on each of the computers to receive CSS. You will need a unique key for each computer, using a key that is already installed on another computer removes Charter Security Suite from that computer

  1. Right-click on the security suite icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen
  2. Click on 'About'
  3. Version info will be listed on the first line

Double-click the Charter Security Suite icon in the Task Bar to launch the application:

To perform a quick scan, click the scan button and select Virus and spyware scan from the drop down menu. Depending on your computer, a quick scan may take a few minutes to complete.

To perform a full computer scan, click the scan button and select Full computer scan from the drop down menu. A full system scan may take some time to complete.

If malware is found, the Charter Security Suite will attempt to clean your computer.

  1. Sign into your My Account.
  2. Click on 'Online Tools' tab
  3. Click on 'Charter Security Suite' tab
  4. Follow the Quick Installation Instructions
  1. Double-click the Charter Security Suite Icon in the Task Bar to launch the application
  2. Click the Settings icon
  3. Click the Internet header on the left to expand the menu and select Parental Control
  4. To change the Parental Control password, click the Change Passwords link

This could happen if the Charter Security Suite (CSS) license key has been used in a previous installation.

E.g. the license key was used to install CSS on another computer within your home. Or you uninstalled CSS and are attempting to reinstall CSS on the same computer.

If you no longer wish to use CSS on another computer, you may use the same license key.

You may also use the same license key for a reinstall.

If you want CSS to remain active on the other computer, you must install CSS with a new license key.

All malicious URLs Charter Security Suite (CSS) detects are reported to F-Secure's Real-time Protection network.

This helps their Security Labs discover new exploits on the Internet and react to protect CSS users.

To access Browsing Protection:

  1. Double-click the CSS icon in the Task Bar
  2. Click 'Settings'
  3. Click 'Internet'
  4. Click 'Browsing protection'

If you are using the CSS software simultaneously on two computers, you must obtain two different activation keys: the first key for the first installation, the second key for the second installation, and so on.

  5. Click 'Check Now'

Note: By default, CSS is set up to automatically check for updates. If you would like to manually check for updates every time, uncheck the 'Turn on automatic updating' box

By default, Charter Security Suite (CSS) provides automatic updates when your computer is turned on and connect to the Internet.

If your computer is turned off or not connected to the Internet, CSS will automatically check for updates the next time an Internet connection is detected.

One possibility is that you have denied your browser's network connections.

To verify this:

  1. Double-click the Charter Security Suite (CSS) icon in the Task Bar
  2. Click 'Settings'
  3. Click 'Network Connections'
  4. Click 'Application Control'
  5. Check that the Access rule is on the 'Allow' mode for your browser (e.g."iexplore.exe" if you are using Internet Explorer)
